Holdings and
specialist collections:
The library comprises some 120,000 volumes, focusing on German literature between 1740 and 1840. The main focal points are Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, his circle, and the Romantic Age. Important resources include the Faust Collection, the collection of literary almanacs and the reconstructed library of Johann Caspar Goethe. The library of Hugo von Hofmannsthal and his complete writings are also held at the Freies Deutsches Hochstift. The periodicals section is particularly noteworthy for its historic collection of some 300 eighteenth and nineteenth century publications.

There is a restricted lending facility. The resources of other departments within the museum can also be consulted by appointment:
